OSCE Veterinary Nursing Instrument Identification Practice Test

Bone rasps are specialized surgical instruments used primarily for smoothing rough edges of bones. During orthopedic procedures, sharp or irregular bone edges can be created when bones are cut or fractured. The use of a bone rasp helps to create a more even surface and reduces the risk of complications, such as irritation or injury to surrounding tissues. This smoothing process is crucial for promoting healing and ensuring that the bone aligns correctly during surgery.

Although other instruments have specific functions such as holding tissue or elevating the periosteum (the connective tissue layer around bones), the primary role of bone rasps focuses on refining the surfaces of bone to enhance the surgical outcome. This is why the correct answer emphasizes their function in smoothing bone edges.
